Bored Cat Syndrome

Cats are natural born predators that run and hunt prey since their existence. They are active and like being outdoors. However, within their domestication their habits were changed. The safest option for today’s cat is to stay indoors. The indoor cats live much longer than the outdoor ones because they are less affected by infections, injuries, and ailments that are naturally part of the outer world. Even though staying indoors brings many benefits to the cats, there is a thing that bothers all indoor cats – boredom. Namely, the majority of indoor cats do not have a lot of stimuli that motivate them to physical and mental activities. In the case of kittens, it does not represent a great problem, because they are naturally curious and inquisitive. Their playful nature easily finds a lot of stimuli in their closest environment. On the other hand, cats, especially the older ones, are hard to animate and inspire to take action. During the years, spending indoors, they easily become couch potatoes, not interested what has happened in their surroundings; the only exception is food. A cat with “bored cat syndrome” will sleep the whole day, and when awake its only preoccupation will be food. We should not underestimate the boredom. It is the cause number one that contributes to feline’s obesity and diabetes. Because of boredom, cats become lazy and slow, unwilling to move. And obesity adds more reasons for a nap and laziness. Lack of activity and obesity put the cat at a greater risk for various diseases. The only way to prevent the cat from boredom is to start playing with her/ him. Maybe it will be hard to make the cat interested in play, but with patience, everything is possible. Play can help the cat feel better, become more active, and be healthier. Instead of the bored, ill, and unhappy cat we will get the active, perky, and joyful pet.
